Are Canker Sores Inside Your Mouth Herpes

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
whats the difference between a canker sore and a herpe that is inside your mouth?
if i have just one very tiny whitish colored sore under my tongue, close to my lower gum but not directly on it[its at the end of that stringy thing under your tongue], does that sound like a canker? it looks kinda like it has a hole in it and its slightly raised, but very small.

what are the physical differences between the canker sore and herpes inside the mouth?
the sore is less than one millimeter wide..it is really really teeny. I can barely see it. Ive had ones in the past that were solid white, had the hole, and were long. most often they are in a place where I cant see them too well, like between my gum and cheek or under my tongue...occasionally they are on the inside of my lip down near my lower teeth too. I first noticed them at age 14 and I broke out in them more frequently then than I do now., but they are usually pretty rare.

    • ANSWER:
They are the same thing. They are viral in origin and often crop up when you are run down. Canker sores vary in size and are generally red with white borders and slightly indented (as opposed to a bump). They can appear on virtually any pink tissue in the mouth. Canker sores can last up to 3 weeks. A great treatment is Zylactin-B. It is an ointment. What you do is you dry the lesion and place a very thin layer of the ointment over the lesion and keep it dry for another 30 seconds or so. Once set, the ointment forms a rubbery patch over the sore spot so that acidic or salty foods don't hurt as much. Also, the product contains Benzocaine which gently freezes the sore so that the pain is controlled immediately. You can change the dressing 3-4 times per day.

  2. QUESTION:
    Oral Herpes or Canker Sores?
I noticed this morning that in the middle of my lower lip (specifically where my upper lip meets my lower lip) I felt a canker sore, I think, coming in. It hurt just like an ordinary canker sore inside your mouth. I hadn't accidentally bit it or anything, so I'm a little worried. Later tonight I noticed that the 'sore' got larger and white, almost like a canker sore inside your mouth or a pimple. I've looked online and herpes seems to be clusters around the outside area of the mouth and technically (although I may be talking myself into this) mine is on the inside and just one white bump.

I have never gotten cold sores before/oral herpes and I don't think I've kissed anyone with oral herpes so I don't know if it's just a canker sore or herpes. Is it possible to have a canker sore right where the dry part of my lower lip meets the 'wet' part? Help!

    • ANSWER:
Canker sores are usually raised white lesions that occur on the inside of the mouth. They usually cause some itching and a bit of burning when they break out.
Cold sores usually occur on the out side of the mouth on and or around the lips in blisters or open paper cut like sores. They usually come with symptoms like itching, burning and or tingling around the time a break out happens.
Since this sore is on the inside of the mouth and it's white then I would say it's a canker sore. Canker sores are not oral herpes they are different from oral herpes. Some people think that canker sores are genetic, if one of your parents had them canker sores could have come from them. Also cold sores can be passed on during child hood by being kissed by some one that has cold sores. You could have had an out break when you were very young then never had another.
If you really want to know you can see a doctor and have them test you for oral herpes.

  3. QUESTION:
what's the difference between oral herpes in your mouth or canker sores.?
I have sores in my mouth. I went to the doctor and when i went it was just on my lip at the time and he's like well thats cold sores like herpes stage 1 or whatever it's called. but now i have a bunch of sores in my mouth, like on my tongue and especially on the roof of my mouth by my teeth. are those canker sores or is that oral herpes, or cold sores. cuz i heard that canker sores are inside the mouth and cold sores are outside the mouth. i'm confused what is what!

    • ANSWER:
Herpes simplex, the virus that causes the 'cold sores' on the lips and the border of the lips, has two stages. Primary Herpes simplex is exhibited by a full mouth necrotic infection, fever, malaise, and lasts about 5 to 7 days. The severity of the course of the illness is dependent upon the health and resistance of the host. The secondary Herpes lesions only occur on the lips, and the border of the lips. These are recurrent in nature, and are often stimulated by direct sunlight or acid foods, or a reduction in the hosts resistance. Virtually 100% if the population in this country have a positive titer to the Herpes simplex. So it is possible that you are just now getting a primary lesion. On the other hand, it is possible that you have had the primary outbreak years ago, and the 'cold sore' which occurs only on the border of the lip, was a secondary outbreak, and the lesions were 'apthous ulcers' which can occur independent of the herpes lesions, and are usually bacterial in nature. Hope this helps, there is much more, however I am beginning to bore even myself!

  6. QUESTION:
Canker sore or herpes in the mouth?
If you have the cold sore virus but NEVER had a cold sore ON your lip but you get ulcers in your mouth, is it possible that it's cold sores in the mouth and not canker sores? I've looked at both canker sore pictures and cold sore in the mouth pictures and they both look the same, so since i don't have cold sore on my lip does that mean that im getting mouth ulcers because of the virus? (I hope that wasn't too confusing to understand). I've read that herpes ulcer are more severe than canker sores and that with herpes ulcers you often get them in the same places, but i dont and they range in different sizes (one small one on the inside of my upper lip that came out of no where and one on my cheek that was painless and felt like a little bump but knows a ulcer) and when i get them and there back to back. I'm so confused and don't want to pass it on if im mistaking a canker sore for a mouth ulcer caused by the virus. How do i tell the difference? Is this a herpes outbreak and not a canker sore? Please no rude answers. Im stressed about this enough. I dont want to pass it to my girlfriend if it is indeed an outbreak. Help please.Answer if your only sure about your answer please. Im confused enough. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
It is possible to get cold sores on the inside of the mouth but it's more common to get canker sores on the inside of the mouth. You should also know that canker sores are not related to oral herpes.
If you had a cold sore on the inside of your mouth you may have some itching, burning and or tingling symptoms to go along with it. Canker sores are relatively symptomless, just itchy raised white lumpy lesions.Herpes sores come with more painful symptoms then canker sores do.
How ever you can have oral herpes and have very little symptoms too.
The only way your going to be sure about it is if you get a test for herpes (HSV1) done by your doctor. Don't give your girl friend oral sex and try not to kiss her until the lesion goes away. Don't use paint thinner on your mouth, you could end up making your self very sick or poisening your self.

  7. QUESTION:
    Canker Sores Vs. Oral Herpes?
Recently, I acquired very painful area inside my mouth on the bottom of my lower gum that has a bit of a white pustule on top along with a few areas in the vicinity of the gum that are red and irritated with small white areas on them. They're quite painful, so painful in fact that I visited my primary physician. I had this innate feeling that he would deem these areas to be a canker sores and would tell me that they would dissipate by itself in time, but his reaction was quite different and both embarrassed and upset me. I should say say that he never looked at the actual spot, only the resident who came into the room before him did, and later the primary physician stated that the spot was a result of the Herpes virus.

As a young guy, I guess I shouldn't be proud to verbalize this, but I haven't been sexually active for quite a long time and have never been one to be very sexually active, and so that caused me to do my own research on the topic. I've learned even chicken pox is related to the herpes virus and present in seventy to eighty percent of the adult population and therefore put in a light by the media which sensationalizes a common virus. I also came across this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMMGcDh7yUI created by a dermatologist that stated that canker sores occur inside of the mouth and that herpes occurs outside of the mouth, not inside, which makes me think I could have been misdiagnosed.

What compounds the confusion even more, however, is that even though this dermatologist in the video stated herpes occurs outside of the mouth and not inside, I have seen images online of oral herpes legions INSIDE the mouth, which seems to contradict what the dermatologist said. Please view the video and share your interpretation of it. It is quite short and roughly two and a half minutes in length.

I feel as though there is so much contradictory information that I'm encountering and decided to pose a question here with the hope of acquiring a more definitive answer.

    • ANSWER:
You should definitely go see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Most physicians lack the appropriate knowledge in medicine beyond the most basic and common diseases.

  8. QUESTION:
Canker sore or herpes? I don't know if you can get a canker sore on your lip but,?
This might sound dumb but Im getting over being really sick I had the biggest headache that lasted for days and a cough and sore throat. A couple days ago the inside of my mouth got a bunch of canker sores, I got one on the very edge of the inside of my lip, almost where it was my lip on the outside. In the beginning it looked like all the other canker sores I had but yesterday it got all scabbed and now it sort of looks like a cold sore wich freaks me out cause everyone says that cold sores are herpes! It's not too big I was wondering if maybe its just a canker sore that got all messed up cause it was exposed to air so much? Or if it absolutely has to be a cold sore since its on my lip kinda? I'm honestly embarrassed and freaked out if it is a cold sore, my mom gets them but I have never gotten one I'm pretty sure. I got canker sores on the inside of my lips, the roof of my mouth, the inside of my cheeks, and my tongue and tonsil area so I thought it was kinda weird to get a cold sore too but maybe it isn't. If you can get canker sores on your lip do they look different than cold sores?

    • ANSWER:
See a dermatologist to be sure, or your general Practitioner... wash it and maybe take some Benadryl... if it’s on the inside ..Ask yourself if you have had some tomatoes strawberries or pineapples or a high acid fruit juice lately... oh, yes If you’re a girl sometime during the menstrual cycle it can cause your immunities to be low, enough so it might increase the risk of sores.
Good luck... And try not to mingle in doubt; one should never alarm themselves with until you know for sure it’s not safe or rational.

  11. QUESTION:
    Cold sore or canker sore?
My girl friend gets cold sores once or twice a year during the winter which has led us to believe that she has oral herpes. We've been dating and kissing for over a year and I have never gotten a cold sore or shown signs of it. However about a month ago I got a weird canker type sore on the inside of my bottom lip that really hurt. I'm pretty sure I've had canker sores before and this was something different. It was about the size of a small bead and it was white and inflamed. It went away after about 5 days and I haven't had one since. I've heard many different opinions on whether you can get cold sores inside your mouth. Could this have been a cold sore? I would like to find out before considering oral sex with my girlfriend because I would not like her to get genital herpes.

    • ANSWER:
There is no way to determine the cause of this sore given a verbal description, especially now that it has been healed and gone for several weeks. Usually cold sores are outside of the mouth, but this is not a firm rule.

If you go to your doctor he can give you a blood test to determine whether or not you have been infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2, the viruses that cause cold sores and genital herpes.

Many people are infected with one or both of the HSV viruses and never know it. It is possible to carry the virus without ever showing symptoms.

It will be possible for you to transmit HSV to her during oral sex if you have been infected with the virus. Unfortunately, even if you test negative today, that's no indication that you will test negative again a month or a year from now.

The only way to engage in oral sex and minimize the chance of transmission is to use a latex barrier of some kind. An easy way of doing this is to unroll a condom and use scissors to cut along its side to form a rectangular sheet of latex.

  12. QUESTION:
i have a sore on the inside of my lip, and my lip is swollen, is this herpes?
originally i thought i had bit my lip in my sleep and it was quite sore for the day.
now its turned into 2 small blisters on the inside of my mouth, the lip feels slightly tender when i try to press it, feels quite warm and has made the left side of my lip slightly swollen.

Salty foods tends to aggravate the sores

I've done some research and they say herpes cant occure on the inside of your mouth... and it could jsut very well be a canker sore due to stress and the menstrual cycle
Can someone please enlighten me if this is just a canker sore?

    oral with cold sore? herpes?
Can you give someone herpes by giving them oral with a cold sore if you do not have herpes? If the cold sore is on the inside of your mouth (i think it might be called a canker sore? just from being sick) and you give oral can that start herpes somehow even if you do not have it?

    • ANSWER:
You can pass on many STDs through unprotected oral sex.

A cracker sore is usually because you hurt yourself, you have been drinking lots of juice, illness etc It is not sexually transmitted.
A cold sore is often on the lip or around the outside of your mouth (on your face), they usually burst... these are sexually transmitted.

Often people have Herpes type 1 (cold sores), they don't even know it... this can be transmitted to your partner through oral sex. Many people have this and get it when they are children.

If all you have is cracker sores and you have recently been tested for STDs and came back clean, then you should be fine... use protection next time!!
Be safe and get tested, this will reduce your chance of getting STDs.

    • ANSWER:
Canker sores usually heal up in 1-3 weeks by themselves. Try rinsing your mouth with salt diluted in water, it may try and shrink it an speed up the healing. Even though there is no canker sore medication that can eliminate canker sores, there are herbal and homeopathic canker sore medications that can alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by canker sores.

  16. QUESTION:
Red dot inside mouth, down by lower jaw?
Hello. Last Saturday, I noticed I had a canker sore forming in my mouth, on the upper part of my right cheek (it had formed on one of the natural grooves in our mouth). At first, I thought it was the herpes 1 virus (cold sores), but it wasn't hurting or anything, and from what I read, the lesions that form on your cheeks from the herpes 1 virus hurt really bad. So, I did what I normally do with canker sores: i swished my mouth with warm salty water, 3 times a day and applied salt to the canker sore. It has gone away now (it's not white anymore) and there's still a little bit of a bump, but like I said, the canker sore had formed on one of the natural grooves in our mouth, so there will always be a slight bump. Last week, I also noticed this tiny, pin point red dot on my left cheek, down by my lower jar/wisdom teeth/molars. It went away in a few days (i'm guessing, although I didn't really keep any eye on it for I was more concerned with my canker sore). Today, I was checking my canker sore and I noticed that I know have a small red dot on my right cheek, by my lower jaw/wisdom teeth/molars, just like I had last week on my left cheek. I am also VERY stressed and have been very stressed for a few weeks now. What does this mean? There has been illness going around campus since the beginning of the year and it seems like my body wants to try and come down with the sickness, but I have been drinking juice, water, taking cold pills and vitamins, so I haven't fully come down with the illness; meaning, I've just had some phlegm in my throat and a stuffed nose. Would illness cause little red dots in your mouth? Or perhaps a vitamin/food deficiency? Or maybe because they are by my molars/wisdom teeth/lower jaw? I don't think I've bitten my cheeks at all. The little red dots don't hurt at all. I'm worried because I've never gotten a cold sore before, and if this is the herpes 1 virus showing in my body, I want to know when I'll be getting a cold sore on my lips. Thank you all.

  17. QUESTION:
Some general questions about oral and genital herpes?
What is the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2 ?

If you already have oral HSV-1 or HSV-2 can you have BOTH oral and genital?

If you have oral HSV-1 can you never catch genital HSV-1.. same for HSV-2 ? (kind of the same question as the first I realize lol)?

If both people have oral HSV-1 can the other not get genital even while you have a sore on your mouth.. same goes for HSV-2 ?

Is a canker sore herpes ? If not what is the difference ? Would it be a very obvious difference ?

How often does herpes actually occur inside of the mouth and no just on the outside ?

Are herpes always clusters of bumps ? Or do they definitely turn into clusters if you have just one and it pops ?
Please legit answers only from someone in the medical field or has experience with the virus, I don't have time for people telling me what they THINK they know.

    • ANSWER:
HSV-1 used to be designated as "above the waist" or oral and HSV-2 was "below the waist" or genital. There is a genetic difference. However, as sexual behaviors have changed, the lines have blurred. You can have both types in either area.

  18. QUESTION:
    Help with canker sores?
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a canker sore in your throat (back near your tonsils)? Also, is it possible to have more than one at a time?

For those who don't know, I am NOT talking about cold sores. If you don't know the difference, this is it:

Canker sore: located inside the mouth, not contagious, no know cause (but many theories)

Cold sore: located outside the mouth (on or around the lips or mouth), contagious, caused by a certain strain of herpes virus

Thank you!!! Again I am NOT talking about cold sores.
Wow, really helpful guys. Of course I have googled this already before posting this. And I didn't ask for treatments. That was not one of my questions.

  19. QUESTION:
I have what looks like a canker sore INSIDE my vagina..Caused by a yeast infection?
So the strangest things have been happening to me lately that is just random.

First I have had three MOUNTAIN like mounds on my face in different areas.. obviously like I'm breaking out. But they are the kind that HURT so bad and never really come to a head..? Weird it's like I'm growing cysts..

I have been getting brazilian waxes and I had a cyst like growth in my labia majora in the area closest to my vagina. It hurt like HELL- I could barely walk correctly. So I kept trying to put hot towels on it and just dealt with it... luckily it came to a head and is almost completely gone and relieved now. But I would assume THIS cysty thing was due to an ingrown hair... I also had a huge painful bump at the top of my bikini line that seems to quite obviously be due to an ingrown hair as well. Still hasn't come to a head. Another one smaller than that, came and went lower in my bikini line, not as painful.

Now, all of a sudden, I feel like I may have a yeast infection or something. Sort of red and swollen and though no discharge is really coming out, if I open and look with a mirror I can see some white discharge inside. TO MY HORROR, I opened my labia menora and sitting RIGHT on the wall of my vagina is what looks like a BIG canker sore you would get in your mouth. white on the top, probably about 3/4 the size of a dime. It actually doesn't hurt to touch but the surrounding skin is SUPER sore, just like if you had it in your mouth.

I don't understand what the hell is going on. I am due for my period today, so maybe hormones are attributing to this?

(A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFO: I am very succeptable to canker sores. My mother said when I was born my mouth was COMPLETELY filled with them. I also, as a teenager, used to get bacteria vaginosis quote often, though I think that had more to do with my partner at the time and my personal chemistry. I also have grown cysts as big as a golf ball underneath my armpit that needed to be removed, I have to shave with a one blaze razor under my arms because I develop this PAINFUL cysts so often)...

It is NOT wart like, it's a fresh open wound on the INSIDE of me that has no skinned coverage or anything. From the pictures I've looked at online, it definitely doesn't look like herpes either. Just throwing this all out there.

Could I be pregnant and my hormone changes just be throwing my body out of whack? Could it be a yeast infection that just caused me to have a sore?

From just a few hours ago, it actually looks slightly better. But I am definitely itchy internally and slightly externally.

Weird! HELP!!!!!!!!! And please no dumb comments I'm a 29 year old woman, thanks.
My last day at my job was yesterday- I start my new position on 8/29 so I have two weeks without insurance, so I am seeking out Planned Parenthoods or something but THANKS, YES I am going to go to the doctor but would like to hear others opinions, as I most likely will have to take tests that I won't get results back for right away....

    • ANSWER:
Most likely NOT pregnant. It actually sounds like herpes to me but I don't have them so I don't really have much knowledge of that. With your background it's too hard to say so you really should see a doctor. Maybe a staph infection everywhere. I heard of someone who needed to bath in something special because of that and it just kept spreading.

  20. QUESTION:
oral herpes question - am I being overly paranoid?
I made out with someone random at a club for the first time ever. He had no signs of an outbreak, but I know you can still get herpes without signs of an outbreak. I am extremely paranoid about getting herpes. Currently, I get canker sores on the inside of my mouth, but have never had anything else on the outside of my mouth. My question is, what are the chances of getting herpes? If I did have it, when would I experience an outbreak? Am I just being overly paranoid? What percent of the population has it? If you do have herpes or know someone with herpes, does it seriously affect your life? Any other helpful info? I tell ya, the first and last time I will make out with someone random.....

herpes warts or just a sore?? pls help!! :( i need answers!! dont ignore!! pls!!?
I went to my gyno this past friday and she told me i might have hpv-genital warts.. since then ive been eating right, excerising, and taking 3 different kind of vitamins bc ive read that your body can fight the virus if you just keep a healthy diet and life. She said i wouldnt be able to see the wart if i looked bc she did a biopsy on me and did something.. but today when i looked..it looked more like a sore on the inside of my vagina. I get canker sores in my mouth (have all my life) and thats kind of what it looks like down there..and its sore..Ive had many yeast infections though and i have had unprotected sex. Could she possibly diagnosed me with the wrong thing? (i got back tommorow) I was thinking the only thing it could be besides warts are genital herpes..are these preventable too if u take care of urself??
    And are warts usually sore?
I also have pain in my uterus/left side of my abdomen..close to my ovaries i think, i think it might be a cyst but maybe something to do with the sore i have??

    HELP!!
    no rude comments please.

    • ANSWER:
It is very possible this could be genital warts. Your overall health has nothing to do with whether you can get them or not. It has everything to do with having unprotected sex. Genital warts can be removed but often take multiple visits to the doctor and sometimes even then, they can come back. If you are having abdominal pain, hopefully, you talked with your gynecologist about this too. Some additional testing may be needed for this. Talk with your doctor about your options when she calls you back. You can go to WebMd and read up on genital warts so that you can have the knowledge to ask appropriate questions when she calls you tomorrow.

  22. QUESTION:
Canker sore on right cheek, up by teeth?
Hello. I noticed Saturday that on the inside of my right cheek, up by my teeth, I had what I thought was a bump from when you bite your cheek (say, when chewing or sleeping). It's wasn't painful at all and I kept playing around with it with my tongue. Well today I noticed I still have it and again, it's not painful or anything. I decided to take a look at it and this is what I saw: first off, it's slightly raised (I knew that by feeling it with my tongue) and when I looked at it, it looked like a pimple. It's red, and has white circle in the middle. I've had canker sores before, but they have always been on my gums and have never been raised like this. Is this a canker sore or something else? Did I happen to just bite my cheek and now it has gotten inflamed? I am under a ton of stress and I think I may be coming down with a cold, so maybe it's just a mouth ulcer (aka, canker sore, right?). Or is it herpes. I honestly tried to pop it and nothing. Again, it doesn't hurt at all, it's just more annoying. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Even you need stress management sometimes. Stress can make it hard to think clearly, it makes it hard to come up with solutions to problems and it can even have an impact on your health. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to significantly reduce the amount of stress you experience, and this answer will be covering a few of the best methods.

Strenuous exercise may be the best stress management technique of all. There are many well known health benefits to exercise, but it's also known to be a great way to lower stress. Exercise that makes you sweat and increases your heart rate, such as cardio or aerobic activities will naturally relieve stress and make you feel better. Find a physical activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your life. Whether you prefer the gym, dancing or playing tennis, find something you like. It's too easy to focus on worries and problems when you sit around, and this is how your stress levels rise. Physical activity is one of the quickest ways to reduce stress that there is.

Did you know that music is one of the best stress management resources we have? Give yourself a way to play your favorite stress reducing music whenever you might need it. Between mp3 players and other mobile devices, you can bring music almost anywhere now. It doesn't matter whether your stress levels go down when you listen to soothing new age music or the loudest heavy metal, as everyone has their own preferences.

Music is one of the best natural mind-altering tools we have. Among many other places, your car is a good place to use this method, as music can lessen the stress that often accompanies driving. Whether you listen on a stereo system, iPod or laptop, make sure your favorite music is never far away.

Stress management is more effective when you've had adequate amounts of rest. Do you sleep well at night, you need adequate levels of rest to manage your stress more effectively. Make sure you adjust your activities for a healthy bed time to ensure enough rest. Most of us could reassess our evening activities and discover that we do have more hours to sleep if we stop playing those video games or watching TV. Cat naps in the middle of the day can help fill in the gaps when going to bed early or waking up late can't be done. Insomnia is sometimes the culprit in which case you need to talk to your doctor for a solution. Your body and mind cannot operate well when they are not well rested so make this a stress management goal. You've now heard only a few of the most effective stress management tips available there are still other ways to approach the management of your overall stress. The first step is to identify the sources of stress in your life so you can find a way to deal with them. There are a number of ways to deal with circumstances that are beyond your control you simply have to realize that there is nothing you can do about it and deal with it appropriately.

  23. QUESTION:
How soon can signs of herpes show up?
I'm 16 and i was with my girlfriend yesterday and we've kissed before but it was just little ones, but i was out her house and we were laying on her bed making out, I don't think she has herpes i never really think to ask i know it can make canker sores around your mouth and she didn't have any that i could see and she doesn't usually wear makeup. we didn't have sex, and i went home and the next day around 11am i noticed that i had a small canker sore on the inside of my lip. Could this be herpes? or just a regular sore, because I've gotten sores like this every now and then and maybe its just a coincidence. I heard that you can get them by biting your lip or maybe just spontaneous. Any ideas? and in the worst possible case it is herpes whats a way i can keep it from outbreaking?

    • ANSWER:
I wouldn't worry. About 85% of the population has Herpes 1 (the oral kind). We usually get it as children. Some people have breakouts, others don't. Sometimes stress, sunlight, foods, etc will trigger it so you may have to avoid these at sometime. It may just be a canker sore as well. Either way, not a big deal. If you are still concerned I would see a physician and speak with your gf.

  24. QUESTION:
What are the chances i have aphthous ulcers and not herpes?
during my next checkup i will ask my doctor. i am 19 and my whole life i have gotten canker sores (inside my mouth) and pimples on my tongue. maybe once or twice i had a cold sore. my mom has this too and i think her one of her parents or grandparents. my brother who is adopted, has never gotten these sores like i do and my dad who has obviously had contact with my mom has never gotten these sores. i have shared drinks and have kissed people, but they have never complained. btw, i have only kissed two guys and so far, the second one who i don't talk to anymore has never complained to me about sores. i also get warts on my hand and was wondering if these are herpes related. so far, my condition sounds hereditary, but i want your personal experience on the issue. maybe you have ulcers or herpes and i want to know. thanks
i get these sores on the inside of my mouth, not the outside, but thanks anyway.
i dont ever get the sores on the outside now, i mean.

    • ANSWER:
Kids can get herpes from adults that don't know they are getting a break out or think they are no longer contagious and simply kiss their child. IT is REALLY embarrassing to have anything festering on the face. I see people that run up to me and tell me to look at something on their face and ask in terror if it looks like a boil or a bug bite. There are different types of herpes. Teens (younger teens) love to tease each other or tramatize each other with "you got herpes" chants. Don't get too worried about it. What ever it is, it will be embarrassing when it breaks out. I say it would be better if its cold sore/herpes because they have medicine to clean it up before it has time to show.

    • ANSWER:
Since 50% to 80% of adults have oral herpes - with most catching it from relatives in childhood - I'd put my money on oral herpes.

For pete's sake, though, get these darned things diagnosed! If it's hereditary, great. But if its NOT, then you should know that. And there are medications to help make the outbreaks less frequent.

Getting these sores diagnosed, by the way, does NOT mean asking a bunch of folks on the internet what they think. It means going to a real doctor who will look at the sores and do tests and tell you what these are and help you treat them.

Further, herpes testing does NOT mean kissing a bunch of people when you have a sore and finding out if THEY get herpes. Pretty thoughtless, in my book.

  26. QUESTION:
Is this normal during your menstruation?
A day before I was getting my period the back of the gum of my front teeth was swollen and red and now it hurts and feels like a cut. Is it herpes? It doesn't look like a canker sore. I'm confused because i have never had a cold sore on the outside of my mouth or in the inside. I am just reading all these articles and am a little scared.Thank you!

  27. QUESTION:
    Cold Sore After Making Out!!!?
I was making out with this girl and as I was making out with her I started to feel that tingling sensation that u get when your about to get a cold sore. The girl has been known to get around alot, Ive been getting cold sores since I was little, if she would have given me herpes would I have developed a cold sore so fast, minutes only from making out with her? And the next day I started to develop canker sores inside my mouth, i know canker sores arent from herpes but could all this be from her?

    • ANSWER:
Cold sores are caused by the oral herpes virus, they are slightly different from genital herpes. Cold sores also don't typically show up that fast. If they showed up with in hours of kissing then you could have had cold sores for a long time. If you had them before you started kissing girls then either the kissing session or some thing you did before that could have triggered a break out. You should know you can get cold sores with out ever having sex or making out with some one.
Most people get them during child hood by being innocently kissed by some one that has them. Caner sores are not oral herpes, as far as I know they are not contagious but some doctors believe they are hereditary so ask some family members and see if they have canker sores too. Canker sores and cold sores are totally different. Canker sores occur on the inside of the mouth, cold sores affect the out side of the mouth on or around the lips.

  28. QUESTION:
CAN YOUR WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT NOT SHOW SIGNS OF INFECTION?

    • ANSWER:
many of those symptoms lead to HIV, and it is not uncommon to have a negative test result when you are actually HIV positive. get retested.. but overall sounds like you just named everything you could think of.

      -vaginal discharge: normal
      -skin tags: normal
      -sores: possible STD
      - bump on cervix: might actually be the cervix, if you gyno can't see it, im sure it's fine
      - etc..

start thinking about what's changed recently versus worrying so much about the little things. that's what confuses doctors, when you talk about 100 different things when really the worst symptom is the cause of everything else

your thyroid problem is most likely causing your lymph nodes to be swollen, as well as most of the symptoms above

as for the acne.. it is stress induced.. and you seem to be very stressed.

i suggest stop taking so much medications, consult more doctors until you're satisfied, they know what your blood work reveals, not us

  29. QUESTION:
    Does this sound like herpes?
Ok I am going to start off by saying I have never kissed a girl or had sex, had girlfriends but nothing intimate like that, lol... But I am not sure but I have little blisters, not grouped or anything, on the inside of my mouth, I had a blood test 3 months ago that came out negative for HSV, because I thought I had it awhile back but it was really just acne. I get this blisters but they never ever scab, I know that not all scab but they usually always do... and it does not hurt... What gets me worried is that I drank something today and my finger that had a papercut on it actually grazed the area I drank from a bit, and now i am scared that i have whitlow... Part of me is telling myself that it is ridiculous because I havent done anything to cause it like sharing drinks or kissing people, and if I were to get herpes it wouldnt happen on my mouth... If you know anything alternative to what blisters in your mouth could be, can you give me a name and I will look it up... Last question, do canker sores blister before they pop because I dont think so, and arent cold sores suppose to hurt at least slightly or tingle, because these blisters have no pain what so ever at all, it just fields like my lip.

    • ANSWER:
Herpes is not transmitted through blood. You would have to have some cuts around your cuticles then be chewing on your fingers when you have an out break of cold sores (which is caused by oral herpes and is the main cause of herpes whitlow).
You can get oral herpes just from kissing, you don't have to have oral sex to get oral herpes. Herpes can also appear as single blisters when you have a mild out break.
If you don't have HSV then you won't be able to give your self herpes whitlow.
Canker sores are more like a raised white sore that occurs from biting the soft parts of your mouth, or eating rough textured, or spicy foods.
You may want to get tested for HSV again since it can appear at any point in your life and you wouldn't always know that you have it.

  30. QUESTION:
many clear large blisters on roof of mouth?
I am 46 years old. Never had this before. Have had canker sore on tongue or on inside cheek. This is not the same. I woke up with my mouth inside bothering me. I used my tongue to feel them and I had many blisters, clear with clear fluid inside, only on the roof of my mouth. Slept three more hours, got up and they were gone. Next night nothing. Work up today without anything, but this afternoon I felt three small clear blisters on roof of mouth. Not big and all over like the two nights before. It has not spread to lips, tongue, but my throat is starting to hurt today. I am not scared about it. Going to try the rinse with Mallox suggestions I see here. There is not white color either like a fungus infection. Have not kissed anyone or done anything sexual. I know herpes can show up anytime - but from what I read it does not show up for the first time here - so about three weeks ago I had a severe sinus infection and was on an antibiotic for five days. Could I have a yeast infection in my throat (thrush or thrash) and have blisters on the roof of my mouth? Thrush - I thought I would see white stuff - it is getting worse - so I guess I have to go to medical doctor tomorrow if it is worse. Would yelling cause this problem? I did not eat anything too hot. My throat is hurting more and more and it is past the point in my throat where it is visible. Just below and where your throat turns in the back of your mouth is where it hurts. Just give me some ideas please.

I am also very tired the past four days. Thanks for any comments.

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like your coming down with strep throat which is accompanied by white sores in the mouth sometimes. I would gargle reall good with warm salt water at least 3 times a day, and see a doctor ASAP for a strep culture. Herpes outbreak would be the lips.

  31. QUESTION:
Is this oral herpes or something else?
So I do kiss a lot of people, but i have been consistently kissing one boy for a good week and a half... and I just noticed that my lips are acting weird... First it was right on the inside of the upper and lower lip, like where your lip part ends and the wet fleshy part begins on the inside. I noticed there was white looking skin that was like splotchy on my lower lip and upper lip. I took a kleenex and wiped my lip and the white stuff went away. The white looked like what a canker sore looks like, just less inflamed. So, after the kleenex the white went away and now, a couple days later, those same places kind of sting and their red. Like i got hit in the mouth or bit my lip a bunch of times. They're not raised, they're flat, but red and they sting a little. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  32. QUESTION:
i have a sore under my tongue. canker or herpe?
I have one tiny whitish, round sore underneath my tongue, it is near the very bottom of my bottom gum. Ive heard that herpes that are inside the mouth only occur in on the roof of your mouth or in the back of your throat..also that they are red and are usually in small clusters rather than just one. Ive had these sores before but they are always just at the base of my gums, tongue, under tongue, inside of my lips and sometimes the cheek. they are always white, usually slightly lumpy but not much at all. and they are usually pretty small. sometimes they look like they have a small hole in them. When I first began getting the outbreak of them was worse than they usually are now. I rarely ever get them though. im pretty sure they are ulcers but I need to be sure. I had oral sex with my bf last night and I felt this sore later in the night. I dont believe it could be herpes. Am i wrong?

  34. QUESTION:
    Cold sore or canker sore?
Hi, so first of all I'm 14, homeschooled, and only ever kissed 1 guy (who had only kissed one other girl who hadn't kissed anyone) so I dont know how I'd get herpes? But I have a sore on the outside of my lip... It looks like a canker sore but I have heard you can only get those inside your mouth. What could it be?

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like a cold sore - herpes simplex. Once we have it we have it for life and you might have been kissed by someone with a lesion when you were a baby.
they tend to break out when we are stressed, in windy sunny or windy cold, dry weather and if we have a cold
Try Zovirax- available from a pharmacy and some supermarkets.

Thank you all

    • ANSWER:
Cold sores inside your mouth are pretty uncommon, especially if you haven't gotten cold sores on your lips before. Some people are actually immune to the cold sore virus, and even if they are exposed directly, they won't get any.
Even if the dots in your mouth are cold sores, they will not go to your lips automatically. Cold sores stay in one area, they don't really travel unless you directly put the virus on another part. If you touch a cold sore and then touch a different part of your face, then you might develop a cold sore in that new spot.
It doesn't sound like you have cold sores in your mouth though. Cold sores are not little red dots. They might start as little red dots but they expand into larger lesions. And it's not common for cold sores to grow inside the mouth. I've had cold sores since I was a little kid, and I've never gotten one in my mouth.
I think that the sores in your mouth are an effect of your stress and the sickness going around. If they were cold sores they would hurt and be bigger than just little dots.
Drinking juice might not be the best thing for your sores, though. Even though you need the vitamins you would get in juice, the acid in juices such as OJ will irritate and inflame mouth sores.

are canker sores inside your mouth herpes
